I heard from a Memrise user about the soon move of user-generated content from Memrise to Decks, without access to an app and so far unknown functionality.

Memorion offers similar games than Memrise and is a full-fledged flashcard management system based around a spaced-repetition algorithm, with tons of edit and configuration possibilities.

In this post I will explain how to move content from Memrise to Memorion directly, without the need for other programs/tools.

This route is rather easy, but it will transfer only the card texts, not the learning progress. It will also not transfer sound files, but Memorion is very good at using the Text-To-Speech engine of the device (if sound files are available, they can also be used).
Transferring the learning progress has been beyond my reach so far, since I have not found out a way to obtain this information. If any of the Memrise users knows how to access it, please let me know and will do my best to make it available to everyone.

Start the Memrise or the Decks website on the browse on your Android device. The tutorial is based on Chrome, but should work with any browser.

Go to the Deck you want to transfer

In the top-right you tap on Share

Of the possible options to share with, choose Memorion and the app will start (if you have shared with Memorion before you can also tap on the small Memorion icon in the list).

Check, if you want to have the imported levels numbered (guaranties there order) and tap OK.

The next step is to configure the imported stacks. For this select the imported stack and click Configure (bottom right on above figure).

Memorion offers similar games than Memrise and is a full-fledged flashcard management system based around a spaced-repetition algorithm, with tons of edit and configuration possibilities.

In this post I will explain how to move content from Memrise to Memorion via MemriseUtilities.

This route is rather easy, but it will transfer only the card texts, not the learning progress. It will also not transfer sound files, but Memorion is very good at using the Text-To-Speech engine of the device (if sound files are available, they can also be used).
I will write another blog entry using Memrise2Anki-Extension that should transfer the learning progress as well (as far as it is compatible).

go to MemriseUtilities and install the script engine Tampermonkey or Greasemonkey. Another click installs the MemriseUtilities script.

now you can go to the Deck you want to transfer and click on Word List, as explained MemriseUtilities website in 1).

Mark all the text in the Course Word List as TSV and copy it to the clipboard (e.g. with Ctrl-C).

Open an Editor, e.g. Notepad and paste the words with Ctrl-V.

Repeat steps 2-4 until all decks are transferred into one large Editor text.

Now save this text, e.g. as Memrise.txt.
Important: is has to be done with the encoding 'UTF-8', otherwise non-ASCII characters will have problems. In Notepad this can be changes next to the Save button in the Save dialog.

Email this file to your Android device.

On your device open the email and View the attachment. Memorion will open automatically and allows you to import. Make sure that the 'Last field per line is (sub)stack name' checkbox is checked. Otherwise your cards are not distributed into the respective substacks.

as always I am a bit behind with the blog since my time is taken up by developing new features and fixing bugs!

Version 6.1: this release improves the optic of Memorion:

a new night mode with dark cards reduced the glare in dark environments

nicer animations for Beginners in the ItemList

improved reading of cards

a ton of bug fixes

Version 6.2:

improve the Tablet experience by better adapting font sizes, allowing more information on the screen etc.

improve the landscape experience (important especially for tablets): new layouts for many page make better use of screen, landscape card theme

Version 6.2.5: incorporates some user feedback that didn't make it into 6.2

more functions working on searched or filtered card lists

improved animations in MatchEm and PickOne etc.

And now I hopefully have the time to finalize the 6.5 release with a lot of LanguageWizard related improvements!!

the main improvements are:

Auto-Read: during my studying of Turkish and the three Baltic languages I realized, how important oral learning is, especially if you are learning words difficult to pronounce. Therefore by default Memorion is reading the foreign Question or Answer to you automatically, you don't need to tap the speaker icon. This is now used to configure the automatic reading.

cards can have Links to cite each other

GenderMe: a game to practice articles/genders of nouns

JustListen: just play the text of the Question and Answer to you, ideal to repeat stuff hands-free (and optionally eyes-free, you can switch the device off to save battery) while driving, cooking, in bed...

Listen: in ExpertMode the game JustListen can be started directly from the ItemList page. When all the bugs and difficulties with all the different devices, TTS engines have been solved, this will become also available in BeginnersMode

card in 2 new languages for the LanguageWizard: Latin and Czech (thanks Evar and Przemek !)

you can adapt the learning algorithm to the difficulty of your cards

and many small thingsMemorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-5883314911411854102015-08-25T05:49:00.000-07:002015-08-28T08:22:41.859-07:00Memorion 5.80 has been releasedThis Update focuses on how to document your Play efforts better:

at the end of each game you get the percentage of correct answers

the main Play page shows all the games you have played today (and how well)

the ItemList page shows the number of correct answers as a bar graph (long-tap on Statistics, if not currently shown)

v5.81: a few bugfixes, mostly certain usual play configurations

Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-40859665163943272122015-08-10T07:05:00.000-07:002015-08-17T00:40:48.756-07:00Memorion v5.70 is releasedVersion 5.70 is mostly about to make the start for new users smoother.

The idea of the Smiley-Man bubbles is that that would tell you what the next step to do is on a give page is or what the most important functions are. As if I was sitting on your side, helping you along. And that's how the idea for this help was born: me watching new users sitting beside me and helping them to get started.
Tell me if it's working or if you need more/other help!

Versions 5.72-5.73: bugfixes (I prepare a big update in the background and some bugs have leaked through)Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-5030119203786458842015-07-03T01:19:00.001-07:002015-07-03T01:34:32.437-07:00Memorion 5.60 has been released

This update brings a full visual overhaul, with new icons, new buttons and color schemes. Memorión now looks very sleek!

I also further reduced the number of functions of the Beginner mode to the bare essentials for learning and the Advanced mode has been removed (the user mode icon now just toggles between Beginner and Expert)

Long-tapping on items now switches to selection mode (according to Android standard)

Version 5.21 fixes a few bugs of the mayor release v5.20.

Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-63351311156892096132015-01-30T16:40:00.001-08:002015-01-30T16:48:55.428-08:00Memorion v5.00 is outThe last months I was just busy cranking out new Memorión versions, therefore this blog has been neglected a bit. But it was worth it!

Version 5 has become much simpler, especially for the new user.
Memorión starts now with a very cleaned up user interface, having clever automatisms work in the background. And when you become a Memorión expert, all the functions you are missing on the other flashcard programs are becoming visible and you gain full control.

Additionally, Version 5 let's already the beginner use all registers of the powerful learning engine (that previously only advanced and expert users had access to), while hiding its details completely.

Notifications will help you keeping up with learning.

v5.02 brings some tweaks and bugfixes, so now I can concentrate on the next developments.

And not to completely forget about the versions not receiving a post before:

v4.8x: you can share databases, stacks, cards, plots; weekly updates to cloud services

v4.7x: better ColorDict support, more plots and many, many bugfixes

v4.6x: learning model now incorporates delayed repeats for more efficient short-term learning

Have fun never forgetting again...

VolkerMemorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-80164875821982025072014-09-28T00:47:00.001-07:002014-09-28T00:47:36.646-07:00Memorión v4.50 has been releasedThis time I worked pretty hard on new plots.

The most important one is the daily Progress Report with smileys:

The type of smiley tells you how diligent were that day, the halo changes its color depending on how many day you have been using Memorión w/o break (up to royal purple, even I have not reach it, yet).

But I also added 7 more plots to the statistics page, telling you how many games you have played, how many cards studied, the maturation progress and more.Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-73186158179331520692014-08-20T01:21:00.001-07:002014-08-20T01:21:46.065-07:00Memorion v4.30 is releasedThis update adds functions to Copy/Paste/Swap etc configurations in ExpertConfig.

There are also a couple of bugfixes.

Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-68248647735803672782014-08-15T01:03:00.002-07:002014-08-15T01:03:59.627-07:00Memorión v4.20 is releasedThe stack configuration page had been very powerful, but it was too complicated, especially for newcomers.

Therefore Memorión has a new Simple Config page for the most basic needs, like changing the asking direction, the languages for the different fields, how many new cards to learn every day.

Meanwhile the old configuration page changed to the Expert Config page, the wizards being vastly simplified, a more compact layout and a fixed preview row to see all changes directly in action.

v4.21: fixed a small oversight for tablets, sorry for that (the feature to go to the configuration page directly from the card view was too last minute to be fully tested...)Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-89281190894968012682014-07-09T01:46:00.004-07:002014-07-09T01:46:52.000-07:00Memorión 4.10 releasedThis version brings a feature I am thinking about since two years: Multiple-Choice (MC) cards

MC is easier than regular active recall, therefore its main purpose in Memorión is as a last resort for difficult cards (either manually or after too many lapses). But there also some categories of cards that benefit genuinely, like cards asking for images, photos and formulas.

Working on the CardEdit page, I also revamped the answer modes using the keyboard and the whiteboard, such that, when learning new cards, there is a feedback while typing and a copy mode to get the answer right.

All these answer modes can be pre-selected per stack, allowing e.g. the Hindi stacks to always show the whiteboard and for you to type the French stack with all these accents...

Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-2751798695056455282014-06-17T01:39:00.001-07:002014-06-17T01:39:55.152-07:00Memorión v4.00And brings with it a whole new way to learn and study cards:

Card Games
So far, there are 6 different games implemented, focusing on different aspects of passive and active memorization. There are various multiple-choice scenarios like 1-on-n, n-on-n, based on text and acoustic understanding. Special training to learn numbers. Hang-Man, you name it.
All with statistics (more to come), different levels, different selections of cards to play with.

Have as much fun with it as I and my beta-testers do.

This is really a second leg to learn stuff, repeat it before an exam, just spend some extra free time to practice your cards.
No need to commit cards (but it probably works even better on committed cards).

Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-49457686605631057942014-05-10T23:24:00.002-07:002014-05-10T23:24:49.258-07:00Memorión v3.40 is outHi everyone.

This new update include ways to more actively recall your answer using a whiteboard, a keyboard or audio recordings. On the answer side of the card you can compare your answer with the correct one.

I was thinking about the whiteboard for some time now. But it was Samantha's suggestion to be able to type the answer that let me think: What the heck, let's implement it.

Also I would like to thank Serkan to take his precious time to translate the flashcards to Turkish. I am very grateful.

BTW, if you are native of a language not supported by the LanguageWizard and know German and/or English well: If you are interested in helping me with a new translation, contact me (Memorion@gmx.net), it would be really great! It would mean to translate an Excel sheet column into another, normally a few hours of work.

There is one more plot, showing the forget rate as a function of the previous interval.
Also I incorporated many bug reports and fixed a bunch of small things.

In the background I am working on version 4 (since finishing v3.00). But depending on how smoothly things are progressing there might be a further intermediate release. We will see...Memorionhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/10119754884045949376noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3157798416961007351.post-80709197024250525952014-04-12T01:27:00.001-07:002014-04-12T02:27:16.958-07:00Triple Gold AwardHi everyone, one of my older stacks reached three golden stars today, that means >3000 days average interval...
